Sometimes, it all comes down to finding the right ‘fit’. This is someone who listens to and understands you, and who you feel comfortable with. But as you start looking around for a solicitor and arranging consultations, there are some other important things to look out for.

Here are our tips for finding the right divorce lawyer:

1. Choose a specialist

You’ll have heard of the expression ‘jack of all trades, master of none’. You’re looking for the opposite, someone who specialises in divorce and separation. This specialist will have years or even decades of experience in dealing in with divorce. So they’ll be better placed to handle any situation, whether it’s complex issues surrounding children or the division of high value assets.

2. Check their credentials

Your divorce solicitor should be fully qualified and experienced in family law. Feel free to ask about qualifications and specialisms when contacting solicitor firms. You should also check that they’re regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). And for extra peace of mind, see if they’re listed on the likes of The Law Society website.

In some cases, the firm may have been nominated for or won an award. For example, here at Tracey Miller we were named one of the Top 3 Family Law Solicitors in Liverpool by ThreeBest Rated. We also won the Small Firm Award at the Liverpool Law Society Legal Awards 2015.

Awards aren’t everything of course, but they do offer some reassurance of the quality of the service offered.

3. Look for a Resolution member

A divorce can be a stressful, disruptive and painful time in your life. Drawn-out proceedings, in-court conflicts, blame, accusations and arguments can only make things worse for everyone involved.

This is why Resolution exists. It’s an organisation made of up of family lawyers committed to the constructive, non-confrontational resolution of family disputes – including divorce. By going with a solicitor who is a Resolution member, you can be sure that they’ll consider the needs of the whole family while guiding you towards a resolution. Cases will also be kept out of court where possible.

4. Good communication is key

You can learn a lot about a divorce solicitor by the initial contact you have with them. Do they get back to you when they say they will? Is everything explained to you in a clear, jargon-free way? Do they offer a free initial consultation so you can get an idea of the service you’ll receive?

Remember that a good relationship with your solicitor is built on trust and honesty. You need reliable information and advice, alongside sensitivity and understanding.

5. Transparency on fees

Lastly but just as importantly, your solicitor needs to be able to explain the fee structure clearly. You need to feel free to ask as many questions as you want, to find out exactly how much you’ll be paying. If the firm appears cagey on price enquiries, they might not be the right choice for you.
