Experts have suggested that divorcing women are often “too quick” to take the family home in a settlement, instead of weighing up other assets such as pensions.

As the name suggests, a DIY divorce essentially involves an ex-couple going through a divorce or separation with little or no help from a solicitor.

‘Bird’s Nest Custody’ refers to the arrangement whereby the children of divorced or separated parents live in one house and the parents take it in turns to live in that house with their children.

Money is one of the main causes of disagreements and delays during divorce. Many separating couples find it hard to split shared assets, especially for complex financial arrangements – and when you throw things like pensions, shared debts and investments into the mix.

A new campaign has been launched to help minimise the impact of divorce on children, by asking more couples to start thinking about family and child arrangements if their relationship were to end.
